UNC Greensboro is best known for its men’s basketball and soccer teams.
The Spartan men’s basketball team has made it to the NCAA Tournament two times in the school’s history, in 1996 and 2001. 2001 also marked the program’s first conference championship for the basketball program. All of UNC Greensboro’s intercollegiate sports teams are recognized by the NCAA and include the following sports for male athletes:

The Spartans had won five national championships, all of which were in men’s soccer when UNC Greensboro was a Division III school. The NCAA Division III titles in men’s soccer came during an impressive run for the program in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, and 1987.
Yes, the University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartans is a Division I athletics program through the NCAA. However, it is a non-football member of Division I and does not participate in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). UNCG has been a Division I school since 1991, but in the 1980s was a Division III and then Division II school for athletics.
UNC Greensboro is a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon), which it joined in 1997. Before joining SoCon, UNCG was in the Big South Conference, where it won the conference championship cup – the Sasser Cup – for three consecutive years from 1994 through 1997. The SoCon athletic conference comprises ten colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic and southern United States.
The schools represented in the Southern Conference include:
The Southern Conference competes with schools in the Athletic Sun Conference, or ASUN Conference, which SoCon competes against in the regular season as associate members.
UNC Greensboro’s biggest rivals are the North Carolina A&T State University Aggies. North Carolina A&T State University is also located in Greensboro, which makes the two schools cross-town rivals, even though they are in different athletic conferences.
Their rivalry, known as the Battle of Market Street, given the proximity of the two schools on either side of downtown Greensboro along Market Street, extends to basketball and baseball. UNC Greensboro holds the most in baseball, with 49 wins to NC A&T’s 9, while the Aggies hold the lead in men’s basketball has won 12 of the teams’ games compared to UNCG’s ten wins.
